Course Overview

Involving techniques that help keep digital networks, data, computer software and other components safe from unauthorised digital access, this Cyber Security Skills Bootcamp aims to give learners an insight into current information and current security technological practices. It also aims to teach a range of security measures and protections to enable learners to become prepared for the real-world cyber security employment market.

During week thirteen of this Skills Bootcamp, you will work in small teams to solve real-world business problems that are custom-designed by potential employers. You will present solutions in a "Dragon's Den" style pitch to relevant stakeholders. This essential part of your course will enable you to demonstrate problem-solving, presenting, teamwork and self-reflection skills which are crucial to employers.

Application of Information Security Policies and Procedures

Within this unit, learners will identify InfoSec policies, Procedures and Controls and their importance. They will also understand the difference between Information Security Policies, Procedures and Controls and describe and describe and define common information security terminology.

Cyber security awareness and culture

Within this unit, learners will explore Information Security culture, its importance for businesses and how it interacts with different departments in an organization. Learners will also look into the relevance of a layered security model and be able to identify security awareness exercises that can benefit their company.

Maintaining professional knowledge of cyber security developments

This unit will allow learners to develop their knowledge and understanding of past, present and potential security threats, vulnerabilities and breaches. Learners will look at the source material needed to stay up to date with emerging threats and they will categorise common vulnerability exposures.

Information security governance practice

During this unit, learners will identify common areas relating to InfoSec audits, understand basic computer forensic principles and explore the importance of using data ethically. Learners will also look into basic risk management techniques and recognise how to escalate information security events in accordance with relevant procedures and standards.

Skills Bootcamps are for:

  • Adults aged 19 or over as of the 31st August 2023
  • Adults who are employed and looking to move into a new sector and start an entry-level role
  • Adults who are employed and have their employer's co-funding support to progress within the company
  • Learners who are self-employed and looking to grow their business
  • Learners who are recently unemployed (for less than 12 months) or returning to work after a break and are looking to get started with an entry-level job in a new sector
  • Learners who are looking to build upon a Skills Bootcamp by moving onto an apprenticeship in their chosen topic
  • Applicants who have lived in England for at least the last 3 consecutive years, and have the right to work in the United Kingdom (there are exceptions for Ukraine or Afghanistan nationals)
  • Learners who are not currently undertaking any formal education, including another Skills Bootcamp
  • Learners who have not studied a Skills Bootcamp in the current funding year
  • Learners who have a reliable internet connection, a laptop or computer with a camera and microphone and access to Microsoft Office
  • Adults who are able to commit to and attend 100% of live sessions as per the course requirements they are choosing to enrol on

Please note, although our Skills Bootcamps are completed entirely online, due to the way Skills Bootcamps are funded, you can only complete a course that is available in the area that you currently reside in.

Following course completion, including attendance at all mandatory live learning sessions and achievement of all course assessments, those seeking a new job role will be suitable to secure a guaranteed job interview and apply for entry-level vacancies. Below you will find examples of entry-level roles:

  • 1st Line Support Technician (£15,000 – £25,000 per year)
  • Service Desk Advisor (£21,000 - £26,000 per year)
  • Infrastructure Technician (£25,000 – £30,000 per year)
  • Junior Cyber Analyst (£25,000 – £35,000 per year)
  • Junior Security Analyst (£25,000 – £35,000 per year)

Skills Bootcamps are fully funded (that means free) for…

  • Unemployed people (for less than 12 months)
  • Employed people looking for a career change*
  • Self-employed people who are looking to grow their business
  • Employers recruiting an individual who has completed a Skills Bootcamp

*Large employers looking to upskill their current staff will contribute 30% of the cost for their staff members' upskilling. *Small or medium employers (SMEs) will contribute 10% for their staff members upskilling.

14 weeks

You must complete 7 hours of mandatory live learning each week:

  • 6 hours of live learning sessions led by your expert tutor
  • 1 hour with a Careers and Progression Coordinator

Once you are verified as being eligible for the Skills Bootcamp, you can choose from the below range of days and times to attend your live learning sessions:

Daytime & Weekend sessions:

Tuesday & Saturday 9am – 4:30pm

Please note: You cannot swap between weekdays and weekends.

Evening sessions:

Tuesday & Wednesday 6:30pm – 9pm

Thursday 6:30pm – 8:30pm

*Please note your chosen day and time will occur every week for the full 14-week programme

Because our Skills Bootcamps are of Level 3 standard in England, you will be expected to have some existing knowledge and skills within the subject area or job role that you are applying for.

You must also have:

  • A familiarity with applied use of Microsoft Office Suite of programmes
  • Basic functional skills ability including Maths and English

All Cyber Security Technician Skills Bootcamps learners will have the opportunity to receive additional certification in CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+)
